Hope Valley Farms

A community of “firsts,” it was one of the first areas designated for farming.

Welcome to Hope Valley Farms

Hope Valley is nestled just south of Durham’s downtown, between Garrett and Hope Valley Roads, from Chapel Hill Road to Swarthmore Road. A community of “firsts,” it was one of the first areas designated for farming by the King of England in the 1750s. In the 20th century, it became the first country club community in Durham, and one of the first neighborhoods to be designed around the necessity of automobile access.

Historical Significance

Durham’s population doubled from about 21,000 in 1920 to 42,000 in 1925, and the farmlands that originally occupied the Hope Valley site were designated as a site for a golf course and suburb, which were constructed from 1927 to 1945 and included about 125 homes. This area is now referred to as “Old Hope Valley” and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the over 700 homes constructed since comprising the “New Hope Valley.”

Due to the varying ages and architects involved, construction in Hope Valley ranges from traditional to mid-century modern to fully updated homes. Homes range in size from 1,500 to over 8,000 square feet, and in style from townhomes to two-story estates with basements. Lots can range from partial to numerous acres.

Community Amenities

In addition to the golf course, Hope Valley Country Club members enjoy swimming, tennis, and a fitness club. The thriving neighborhood association and new pool allow residents to enjoy a variety of recreational activities. The area is extremely convenient to all major highways, as well as downtown Durham, Duke, and UNC-Chapel Hill, Southpoint Mall, and several shopping centers.
