Maple View Farm is a 400-acre dairy farm located in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Its founder, Bob Nutter, is a fifth-generation dairy farmer. He moved to North Carolina from Maine with his wife and three children in the 1960s. The farm is currently managed by Mike Strowd, who oversees a herd of more than 300 Holstein cows. About 130 of those cows are in the milking herd, and each produces about 8.5 gallons per day. The family brought with them a love of dairy cows and maple syrup. Over the decades, their business has continued to grow: they built their own milk bottling facility in 1996, and launched Maple View Ice Cream in 2001.
When it comes to ice cream, Maple View’s award-winning menu has something for everyone. They offer a variety of classic flavors, like Chocolate or Cookies and Cream, as well as signature flavors like Carolina Crunch and Honey Toasted Almond. A variety of frozen yogurts and sorbets are also available. And although ice cream is a great way to beat the heat in summer, the autumn season may be the best time to stop by: that’s when incredible seasonal flavors like Cinnamon Apple, Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, and of course, Maple, make their appearance on the menu.
As for where to sample these local products, Maple View Farm Country Store is open from noon to 9:00PM Sunday through Thursday, and until 9:30PM Fridays and Saturdays. Grab a cone of their delicious ice cream and settle in on the front porch for views of the farm’s rolling hills for a fantastic family-friendly afternoon.
A trip to Hillsborough is well worth your time for many reasons, but if you live and work elsewhere in the Triangle, you’re not out of luck! Maple View products are available at many local grocers and farmers’ markets in the area, and you can often find the Maple View Mobile ice cream truck at food truck rodeos and public events throughout the Triangle during the work week.
