Southern Village's Calendar Runs on the Third Week of the Month

"Coffee to cocktails, snacks to meals, morning to evening." La Vita Dolce used that line when it announced its move a few doors down Market Street this summer. Nearly four months later, the same arc from daytime to evening fits Market Street as a whole. Three small venues on that street now set Southern Village's evening calendar, and their recurring events land in the same few days each month.

Look at October 15 through 19. Rocks & Acid's monthly Crush of the Month tasting is on Thursday. Karaoke at the Lumina Theater Tap Room is on Friday, Fallfest takes over the Village Green on Saturday, and the Really Really Free Market fills the Green on Monday. November and December follow the same pattern. Most of these series are scheduled by their position in the month, so if you know the rule, you can tell where the busy week falls without checking a calendar.

The move that added a third evening venue

La Vita Dolce spent 11 years at 610 Market Street. Its last day there was June 24. It closed June 25 through July 1 for the move and reopened July 2 at 700 Market Street. Chapelboro's quarterly business roundup confirmed the July 2 reopening. It also noted that the new address is the former Market & Moss space, which owner Annie Johnston had run before, and that La Vita Dolce now has a full-size kitchen and bar.

The new space has a café counter, a larger seating area open to everyone, and a dedicated bar that opens in the evenings. The menu adds house-made breakfast, sandwiches and salads, along with seasonal cocktails, a longer wine list and local beer on tap. The gelato case is still there, with more than 100 flavors. The posted hours since July 2:

  • Monday through Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Wednesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Those Wednesday through Friday hours matter for everything that follows. The café stays open until 9 p.m. on the same three nights the rest of Market Street runs its programming. It shares Market Street with the Lumina at 620 Market Street and joins Rocks & Acid as an evening venue rather than a place that closes at dinnertime.

Wednesday sets the weekly rhythm

Wine Down Wednesday at La Vita Dolce is the most regular event on the street. It runs 5 to 8 p.m. with live music, and the band changes each week. On October 14 it's Are We Them?, who play R.E.M. covers and '80s alternative. On October 21 it's the Popcorn Blue Band, playing jazz and pop.

Wednesday is the baseline. It happens every week, so it doesn't add to the third-week pile-up. It does mean Market Street has something going on at least one weeknight evening, every week.

Thursday is where the month starts to stack

Thursday holds two separate series, and in the third week they overlap.

The first is Magnums, Mules & Mahjong at La Vita Dolce, an open-play session from 5:30 to 8 p.m. It costs $5, and La Vita Dolce says most of that goes toward prizes. The first four or five players who bring an American mahjong set get in free. Moscow Mules are $10, and magnum bottles, listed at 10 glasses each, can be pre-ordered. Players come alone or in groups and the café sorts everyone into tables. The player with the most wins at each table gets a prize. Seats are reserved online, refunds aren't offered, and you can give your seat to someone else. Once a month, the Chapel Hill Mahjong Club takes over the night for a Mahjong 101 lesson and open play, with a teacher and all materials provided.

The second is Rocks & Acid's 2026 Crush of the Month, held on the third Thursday of each month from 4 to 7 p.m. Two of the shop's sommeliers pour eight wines from one well-known grape, along with a few similar grapes as alternatives. Tickets are $30 per person, and the shop suggests allowing at least 30 minutes for the full lineup. October's grape is Pinot Noir, on October 15. Under the third-Thursday rule, November's tasting falls on November 19 and December's on December 17.

Run on their own clocks, the two series overlap from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on third Thursdays. October 15 has one complication. The Southern Village calendar lists mahjong open play that evening, but La Vita Dolce's own mahjong page, updated in August, marks October 15 as a hiatus. The café's reservation page is the one to check before you bring your tiles.

Rocks & Acid has been in Southern Village since around the end of 2022, based on a July 2023 Chapel Hill Magazine profile in which the owner said the shop opened "in December of last year." It calls itself a wine shop and bar focused on terroir-driven wines, and its homepage advertises weekly classes and tastings. The Crush series is only one part of that. October also has a 6 p.m. Thursday session on October 22 called "Hung(a)ry for Ghoulish Grapes: Wines of Central Europe," plus "An Evening with Champagne Billecart-Salmon" on Tuesday, October 20. The shop's FAQ lists hours of noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and closed Monday. That page is undated, so call ahead if the timing matters.

Friday splits between the wine shop and the Tap Room

The Lumina Theater is locally owned and operated, and its Tap Room pours beer and wine and hosts recurring community nights. Its fall 2026 Friday schedule follows the month as well:

  • First Friday Open Mic, 6:30 to 9 p.m., on November 6 and December 4
  • Karaoke Night, 7 to 9 p.m., on October 16, November 20 and December 18

All three karaoke dates are the third Friday of their month, the day after Rocks & Acid's Crush tasting. A 2024 sponsored feature in The Daily Tar Heel put Tap Room karaoke on Saturdays, so the 2026 calendar is the better guide.

Rocks & Acid also runs a Friday session in October. "The Comeback Kids: Nearly-Forgotten Grapes" goes from 6 to 7 p.m. on October 16, and karaoke starts at the Lumina an hour later.

The Green fills in around the evenings

The Village Green hosts summer evening events, including an outdoor screening of Back to the Future that the Lumina listed for May 23 at 8:30 p.m. The fall listings for the Green are all daytime events, and most of them land in the same third week as the Market Street evenings.

Fallfest on the Southern Village Green runs Saturday, October 17, from 2 to 5 p.m.

The Really Really Free Market meets on the Green from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 19, November 16 and December 21. All three dates are the third Monday of the month. According to Visit Chapel Hill's listing, everything at the market is free. People can bring items to give away, take what they need, share food or skills, or provide entertainment. The listing points to the @chapelhillrrfm account for updates.

Rocks & Acid's "In the Nick of Time: Holiday Market" runs December 19 and 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. both days. The calendar listing doesn't give a location, so check with the shop before you head over.

The third weeks, laid out

Put together, the next three months look like this. Dates marked as calculated come from each series' published rule rather than from an individual listing.

October

November

December

Third Thursday, Rocks & Acid Crush, 4 to 7 p.m.

Oct 15, Pinot Noir

Nov 19, calculated

Dec 17, calculated

Third Friday, Lumina Tap Room karaoke, 7 to 9 p.m.

Oct 16

Nov 20

Dec 18

Weekend on the Green or nearby

Oct 17, Fallfest, 2 to 5 p.m.

No listing found

Dec 19 to 20, holiday market, 2 to 5 p.m.

Third Monday, Really Really Free Market, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oct 19

Nov 16

Dec 21

November is the one exception. Its free market falls on the 16th, three days before the Crush tasting rather than after it. The rest of the pattern holds.

December has the most going on. Between Thursday, December 17, and Monday, December 21, the listings include a wine tasting, a karaoke night, two afternoons of a holiday market and the free market. That's five days of events from Rocks & Acid, the Lumina Tap Room and the Green. December 17 is also a Thursday mahjong night at La Vita Dolce unless the café posts another hiatus, and the stretch picks up Wine Down Wednesday on December 16 if that series keeps its weekly slot.

The other weeks still have regular programming. Wine Down Wednesday runs weekly, mahjong runs most Thursdays, and Rocks & Acid fills other nights with themed tastings.
